ZHOU YU

The Inferno

"The enemy isn't standing in fire by accident. You put it there."

Hook & Identity

"There's a general in HOK who never chases. He doesn't need to β€” because the battlefield you're standing on is already on fire. Zhou Yu doesn't react to the fight. He designs it. Every flame placed, every wind summoned, every wall used β€” it's all a blueprint the enemy walks into three seconds too late. In this guide, I'll show you how to think like the Ironwilled Governor β€” and turn Zhou Yu into the Inferno."
0:14 – 1:00

Skill Showcase

"Zhou Yu's entire kit is built around one idea: fire domains that burn, spread, and punish.

Passive β€” Blaze

Basic attacks and skills place fire marks on enemies β€” including towers and structures. Stack four marks and they ignite: dealing magic damage over time and slowing their movement speed. This passive is the engine behind Zhou Yu's sustained damage and his ability to melt towers without a single minion in sight.

Skill 1 β€” Wildfire Β· CD 5s

Zhou Yu invokes a wind domain. Enemies inside are knocked back in the direction he aims and slowed, while allied heroes get a movement speed boost. But here's what makes Wildfire extraordinary: if that wind domain overlaps an existing fire domain for just one second, it clones the fire β€” spreading a new fire domain in the wind's direction. One fire domain becomes two. Two can become three. The wind doesn't just push enemies β€” it fans the flames.

Skill 2 β€” Scorching Bolt Β· CD 0.6s β€” stocks up to 3

Zhou Yu calls down a volley of flaming arrows at a target location β€” dealing burst magic damage, then leaving behind a fire domain that burns for 6.5 seconds. You can have up to six fire domains active at once. And a hidden bonus: while Zhou Yu himself stands inside a fire domain, he recovers health every half-second. He heals by standing in his own fire.

Ultimate β€” Flames of War Β· CD 10s

Zhou Yu unleashes a burst of flames in a target area. On its own, it deals solid magic damage. But if those flames travel through an existing fire domain β€” a firestorm erupts: double the damage, and a one-second stun. The ultimate doesn't create the stun. Your fire domains do. Set the stage first; then bring the fire."

1:00 – 1:45

Core Mechanic & Combo

"Here's the mindset shift that separates a struggling Zhou Yu from a dominant one: your Scorching Bolt is not a damage button. It's a foundation.

You are always laying ground before the fight begins. That's the whole game.

The signature rotation is Scorching Bolt β†’ Wildfire β†’ Flames of War. Place a fire domain with Skill 2, blow Wildfire through it to spread a second domain in the enemy's direction, then fire the Ultimate through that flame β€” and the firestorm triggers, dealing bonus damage and stunning everyone caught in it. Chain multiple Scorching Bolts before the Wildfire and your stun radius becomes enormous.

One critical habit: pre-spread before the teamfight starts. The moment you see on the minimap that a fight is about to break out, throw down two Scorching Bolts at the expected engagement zone. Wildfire has a one-second delay before it copies a domain β€” if you're reacting, you're already late.

For skill priority: max your Ultimate first, then Scorching Bolt, and leave Wildfire last. Your summoner spell is Flash β€” not optional. Zhou Yu has no dash; Flash is his repositioning, his escape, and a key part of several advanced combos."

1:45 – 3:45

Advanced Mechanics β€” Offense, Defense & Combos

"This is where most Zhou Yu players hit a ceiling. Let's raise it.

Offensive Rhythm

Most players think Zhou Yu's job is to sit back and lob fire. That's half the picture.

The real offensive identity is terrain control. Zhou Yu's fire domains wall off movement. Enemies entering them take constant damage and stack marks toward ignition. Used on a chokepoint β€” a jungle corridor, a tower base, a river crossing β€” two or three overlapping domains make it almost impossible to walk through without getting stunned and burned. On the offensive, push that fire into tower range first with Wildfire: defenders are forced to fight in the flames or give up ground entirely.

In lane against heroes who lack strong dashes β€” Fuzi or Musashi β€” trade aggressively. Drop a Scorching Bolt between yourself and the enemy, weave basic attacks to stack Blaze marks, and punish anyone who steps into your flames. Your passive works on the tower too, so keep marks ticking on it even when the lane is quiet.

Defensive Rhythm

Zhou Yu's biggest vulnerability is that he has no escape tool. A single dash-heavy assassin getting on top of him is a real problem.

  • The self-peel technique. When an enemy closes in, drop Scorching Bolt at your own feet to create a fire domain, then immediately cast Wildfire to knock them back. If you have Flash available, Flash first to reposition, then Wildfire to push them into a domain you've already laid.
  • Always keep a charge in reserve β€” and stand in your own fire. Running dry when a fighter steps on you is how Zhou Yu dies. And while you hold that ground, Scorching Bolt's passive heals you inside the domain β€” you'll outlast trades you have no business winning.
  • Against Alessio β€” his ultimate launches him airborne, during which ground-based fire skills won't reach him. Save your Wildfire knockback for when he lands rather than wasting it while he's in the air.
Read the Battlefield
  • Pre-spread before the fight. When you see both teams converging on Dragon, the Altar, or a jungle camp β€” throw two Scorching Bolts into the expected engagement zone before you move there. By the time the fight starts, the ground is already burning.
  • Prioritise jungle terrain. In the jungle, Zhou Yu is disproportionately strong. Narrow corridors mean fire domains cover the entire width of a path β€” enemies can't sidestep. If a fight breaks out near a jungle entrance, that is your preferred terrain.
  • Wall tricks. Wildfire's range is long and it can send fire through walls. At level two, you can use Wildfire in reverse and cast Scorching Bolt over a wall to contest the enemy's Azure Golem without stepping into their vision. Practice the angle β€” the delay before fire copies means timing matters.
Key Combos Combo 1 β€” The Standard Combo (2 β†’ 1 β†’ Ult)

Scorching Bolt to place a fire domain β†’ Wildfire through it to spread a second domain toward the enemy β†’ Flames of War through the spread domain to trigger the firestorm and stun. Layer basic attacks throughout to stack Blaze marks toward ignition. This is your bread-and-butter engage.

Combo 2 β€” The Flash Combo (2 β†’ Flash β†’ 1)

Place Scorching Bolt slightly ahead of an enemy near your own tower, then Flash forward and immediately Wildfire to knock them back into the fire domain β€” and straight into tower range. The Flash-Wildfire can also flip: Flash first to create distance, then Wildfire to push a chaser away when you need space instead of a pick.

Combo 3 β€” The Pre-Lay Ambush (2 β†’ 2 β†’ 1 β†’ Ult)

When you anticipate an enemy path β€” a gank route, a choke, a tower siege β€” place two Scorching Bolts in advance. When they arrive, Wildfire to spread both simultaneously, then immediately follow with Flames of War. The firestorm hits before they even realise it's been triggered. This is the combo that makes Zhou Yu feel like a trap, not a mage."

3:45 – 4:15

Lineup Dynamics & Counters

"Zhou Yu thrives when his team can push enemies into fire and hold them there.

  • Agudo and Liu Shan β€” tower-pushing specialists who create the offensive momentum Zhou Yu's fire needs to do maximum work. When they're shoving, Zhou Yu's domains turn defensive lines into deathtraps.
  • Guan Yu β€” his skills can drive enemies directly into Zhou Yu's fire domains and hold them there. The combination of Guan Yu's crowd control and Zhou Yu's sustained burn is punishing: once someone is caught in that fire, they're not walking out healthy.
  • Tough matchup β€” Alessio. His airborne ultimate lets him float above ground-based fire. Don't blow all your charges trying to hit him mid-air β€” hold Wildfire and punish the landing.
  • Favourable matchups β€” Fuzi and Musashi. Both lack reliable dashes, so they're forced to walk through your fire to reach you. Play aggressively and stack pressure early."
4:15 – 4:30

Closing & Retention Hook

"Zhou Yu never chases. He never panics. He reads the map, places the fire, and by the time the enemy realises what's happening β€” they're already standing in a blaze they can't escape. That's the Ironwilled Governor's way: not force, but foresight. Place the fire. Spread the flame. Let the battlefield do the work. And I'll see you in the next episode."
